The beauty of a 20 year old piece of Glass.

I’ve been wanting to get a 50mm lens now for a few years but couldn’t bring myself to walk away with a plastic fantastic. The quality of the image is extraordinary for the price but the fragility has always put me off. I finally found this little gem on a local sales forum. Antique by todays standards the 50mm 1.8 MK I from canon is identical to the Nifty Fifty in every way but build quality. The fact that this lens has survived the build date of 1987 UB00 date code shows the main difference in the two versions. This one is still alive. I’m not saying the newer MK II is cheap. Well yes I am actually, dropping it onto a carpeted floor and rummaging through the kitchen drawer for glue isn’t a part of my work flow so I needed an alternative.

Never having shot with fast glass I’m still getting used to the razor thin DOF with this instrument, but I couldn’t be happier with the results.

Colour, contrast and sharpness cannot be had for a better price.
